An oven that burns one side of a baking sheet or takes forever to reach temperature is one of those problems that gets easier to ignore over time — until you're standing over a ruined dinner. Electric Bake Element Failure Signs

The bake element sits at the bottom of the oven cavity in most electric ranges. When it starts to fail, heat distribution becomes uneven — one area near the failing section gets less heat while other areas heat normally. A fully failed element produces no bake heat at all, but a partially failed one is more deceptive because the oven does heat, just not consistently.

Visual signs of a failing element include: a visible crack or hole in the coil, a bright spot or burn mark on the element surface, or an orange glow that's uneven or absent in a section. A multimeter test confirms the failure. Replacement is a straightforward repair — the element plugs into a receptacle in the back of the oven cavity on most models.

Gas Igniter Glow-But-No-Flame

Gas ovens use a flat igniter that glows to heat a sensor, which then opens the gas valve. A weakening igniter glows orange — so it looks like it's working — but doesn't reach the temperature needed to trigger the valve. The oven clicks on, the igniter glows for 60 to 90 seconds, and nothing lights. The oven may eventually heat if the igniter is borderline, but it takes much longer than it should and the oven temperature may never fully stabilize.

Temperature Sensor Drift and Calibration

The oven temperature sensor is a thin probe — usually in the upper rear corner of the oven cavity — that measures temperature and sends feedback to the control board. Over time it can drift, reading temperatures that are 25 to 75 degrees off from actual. The oven obeys the sensor's reading and maintains the wrong temperature faithfully.

You can verify a sensor issue with an accurate oven thermometer. Set the oven to 350°F, let it fully preheat, and check the thermometer. A consistent 25°F or more difference points to a sensor issue. Many ovens allow user calibration through the settings menu — check your manual. If calibration doesn't resolve it, sensor replacement is the next step. This is also one of those repairs where the part cost is low and the labour is straightforward.

Convection Fan Issues

Convection ovens add a fan and extra element to circulate hot air. When the fan motor fails, the oven still heats but loses the even-temperature benefit convection provides — one side browns faster, baking times become unpredictable, and the oven runs hotter near the top. You can test for a failed fan by selecting convection mode and listening: you should hear the fan within 30 seconds of the element engaging. Silence means the motor has failed. Why Preheating Forever Means a Service Call

An oven that takes 25 or 30 minutes to reach 350°F when it used to take 12 is telling you something is wrong. In most cases it's a partially failed element, a weakening igniter, or a temperature sensor that's reading low and causing the oven to overshoot in its attempt to compensate. None of these issues resolve themselves — they get progressively worse.
